(notice the golf course in the lava field when getting closer to Rekjavík) When base camp is established at your hotel we recommend that you explore your nearest surroundings and visit the beautiful old city center where a plethora of restaurants, museums, art galleries and shops are to be found.

Day 2: The Golden Circle

Today you will take the Golden Circle drive, a very popular route covering about 300 km looping from Reykjavík into south central Iceland and back. The three primary stops along the way include the beautiful national park Þingvellir (a UNESCO World Heritage site), the waterfall Gullfoss (meaning “golden falls” hence the name of the route) and the geothermally active valley of Haukadalur, which contains the geysers Geysir and Strokkur. Other optional stops (the others are almost mandatory!) include Kerið volcano crater, Hveragerði greenhouse village, Skálholt church and the Nesjavellir geothermal power plant.

Higlights: Þingvellir National Park, Gullfoss waterfall and Haukadalur geothermal area – Driving distance approx. 290km

Day 3: Reykjavík at leisure

Today is a full free day in the city. Go shopping, swimming or take an optional excursion such as whale watching or go for a ride on the Icelandic horse. You can visit a museum, art gallery or simply relax at a nice café in down town Reykjavík. You can also just go ahead and do all those things today if you’re feeling especially energetic but that would mean waking up very early!  In the evening the gourmet restaurants of Reykjavík welcome you with their fresh ingredients and friendly staff.

On that route you will visit the sizzling active geothermal area of Seltún (Krýsuvík Cove) with it’s boiling mud pools. Note that extra care should be taken when exploring Seltún and do not stray off the walkways at any time. Make your way to the world renowned Blue Lagoon and take a bath in the six million liters of geothermal seawater (renewed every 40 hours), You can also if booked beforehand, enjoy an in-water massage in the Blue Lagoon. The perfect way to prepare for your flight home. Head on to Keflavík International Airport where you leave your rental car and board your flight.
