Vestmanna Bird Cliffs

The Vestmanna Bird Cliffs are a stretch of sea cliffs on the northwest coast of Streymoy in the Faroe Islands, rising to nearly 700 metres from the North Atlantic and home to large colonies of nesting seabirds including puffins, guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, and fulmars. Known locally as Vestmannabjørgini, they are accessible only by boat from the village of Vestmanna, and the two-hour tours that depart from the harbour are consistently rated among the best wildlife and scenery experiences in the archipelago. Weather permitting, boats sail into natural grottos and narrow channels carved into the cliff base by centuries of Atlantic wave action.

Nearly 700 Metres of Sheer Faroese Sea Cliff, Reached by Boat Through Grottos and Sea Stacks

The Vestmanna Bird Cliffs run along the northwestern coast of Streymoy, the largest island in the Faroe Islands, and form one of the most dramatic stretches of sea cliff in the North Atlantic. The cliffs rise almost vertically from the water to heights approaching 700 metres, with dark basalt sea stacks standing offshore and natural grottos carved into the cliff base where the ocean has worn away softer rock over thousands of years. The tallest sea stack in the area, Heygadrangur, rises 144 metres from the water. Boats pass within a few metres of these formations, and in calm weather they sail directly into the grottos through narrow entrances that open into cathedral-like chambers inside the rock. The absence of any visible human construction in the entire cliff area adds to the feeling of complete remoteness.

The cliffs are a major seabird nesting site from spring through summer. Atlantic puffins, razorbills, guillemots, kittiwakes, fulmars, and great skuas all breed on the narrow ledges and rocky crevices. The birds are visible at close range from the water and from certain vantage points on board they can be observed fishing, feeding chicks, and returning to nest. Historically, local Faroese climbed the cliffs on ropes to collect eggs, a practice that has largely ceased but is still part of the cultural story guides share on the tours. The boat tour runs approximately two hours and departs from the harbour in Vestmanna village several times daily from May to September.

Vestmanna village sits on the western coast of Streymoy, about 40 minutes by road from Tórshavn. A tourist centre at the harbour handles tour bookings and has a small restaurant and toilet facilities. The public bus Route 100 from Tórshavn connects to Vestmanna and is timed to arrive before scheduled boat departures. Booking in advance is strongly recommended during summer, particularly in July and August when cruise ship passengers from Klaksvík also take the tour. The cliffs can also be combined with a drive to the scenic villages of Saksun and Tjørnuvík on the northern tip of Streymoy, making a full-day loop from Tórshavn.
