Frequently asked questions
Find answers to your questions about our tours and travel experiences in Iceland and beyond.
What is included in a premium self-drive tour of Iceland?
Your itinerary, Superior or Luxury tier accommodation at every stop, and a named Travel Consultant who handles all the planning and is available throughout your trip. The self-drive vehicle is arranged separately and can be upgraded to a 4x4 for highland routes. Every itinerary is built around your specific interests and can be adjusted before you travel.
How long does it take to drive around Iceland?
The Ring Road is roughly 1,300 kilometers and takes a minimum of seven days to cover comfortably, though ten days gives you time to explore properly without rushing. Most premium self-drive itineraries run between ten and fourteen days to allow for detours to Snæfellsnes, the Westfjords, or the Diamond Circle.
Do I need a 4x4 for a self-drive tour in Iceland?
Not for the main Ring Road or South Coast routes, which are paved and accessible in a standard vehicle year-round. A 4x4 is recommended if your itinerary includes highland roads, the Westfjords in winter, or any F-roads. Your Travel Consultant will advise on the right vehicle for your specific route.
What is the best time of year for a self-drive tour in Iceland?
June through August gives you the midnight sun, open highland roads, and the best driving conditions. September and October bring the Northern Lights and autumn colors with fewer visitors. Winter self-drive tours are possible but require more careful planning around road conditions and daylight hours. Your Travel Consultant will help you get the most from whichever season you choose.
Can I customize a self-drive itinerary in Iceland?
Every itinerary at Iceland Unlimited is a starting point. Your Travel Consultant can adjust the route, swap accommodation, add activities, or build something entirely from scratch based on your interests and travel style. There is no standard package — the trip is built around you.
