Horseback Riding from Akureyri - Horses and Heritage North Iceland

This fully guided Iceland horseback riding tour from Akureyri brings you to Skagafjörður, also called the „Cradle of the Icelandic horse“ where a stunning landscape, history, and daily life merge into an attractive destination. After driving through deep valleys and over mountain passes while your guide tells you local folklore, troll stories, and historical facts, you arrive in Skagafjörður. Here you visit the horse farm Lýtingsstaðir with the exhibition The Old Stable, a reconstructed horse stable made from turf. Experience the atmosphere between the damp turf walls and listen to stories about horses and men in the past. Get to know how turf houses were built and why there are only a few left in Iceland.

Afterwards you will get in touch with the horses and can go for a short ride (30 to 45 minutes). Experience and feel yourself what makes it so special! You will then get a little local refreshment and have the chance to talk more to the horse breeder or enjoy a quiet moment out in the countryside. On the way back you take a short walk to the amazing waterfall Reykjafoss, a hidden treasure in Skagafjörður. Full of new impressions you arrive back in Akureyri in the afternoon. This tour is an ideal choice for anyone who wants to find out more about Icelandic culture and daily life during different epochs, as well as to meet the Icelandic horse. Riding skills are not necessary for this tour. Children welcome, the minimum age for taking part in the ride is 6 years. Younger children can be lead on a horse.
