The Majestic Westman Islands – Summer Guided Small Group Tour

Also known by locals as Vestmannaeyjar, this volcanic island archipelago is a unique gem of natural beauty, history and is well known for its incredibly diverse wildlife.Let’s start with some facts: the archipelago contains 14 islands but only the largest one, Heimaey, is inhabited. Several of the outer islands each have a small cabin that is used over the summer during bird hunting season.

This day tour starts from Reykjavík where you will be picked up in the morning from your accommodation. In the company of your guide, you will be driven to Landeyjahöfn harbor while admiring the beautiful scenery of the lavish south coast of Iceland. The ferry ride to reach the Islands is approximately 30 minutes and while sailing you will soon realize the diversity and magic of this place: you will encounter countless seabirds, towering cliffs, mysterious rocks, and clear blue waters. Once you arrive in the main islands, Heimaey, your first stop will be the Eldheimar Museum. Here you will learn everything about the violent volcanic eruption that took place in 1973 and that almost destroyed the entire area.

The power of this natural calamity was so strong that the area is also known as “The Pompei of the North”.After the visit to the museum and if the weather conditions are favorable, you will hike up Eldfell volcanic crater. On a clear day, the views from the top are out of this world.

Next, it is lunchtime! You will visit one of the top restaurants on the island and eat like a local! One main course is included in the tour, and you will get to taste fresh, authentic, made-from-scratch Icelandic delicacies.

After lunch, it is time to look for the real stars of the island: the famous Puffins, that nest and breed in the rocky cliffs along the coast. Curious fact: the Westman Islands is the largest puffin colony in the world! You will walk around with your guide and try to spot the cute birds, also known as the “Clowns of the Ocean” for their unique and colorful look.

The tour is coming to an end but if you are up for an adrenaline rush, it is possible to add a 1-hour Rib Boat tour ride that will let you explore the islands by boat in a fun and exciting way! If you are lucky, you may be able to spot whales and puffins and you will definitely see the sites from a different, unique perspective while bouncing on waves and getting your heart pumping!

After the tour, you will return to the harbor by ferry and then be driven back to your accommodation in Reykjavík for the night.
