About your day
Today, you will be picked up from your hotel in the morning to join an adventurous small group tour. This time around, you will be visiting a lava tunnel, located just 30 minutes away from Reykjavík. Helmets, headlights and all specialized equipment are included but do make sure to wear warm clothes and sturdy shoes, as you will be spending 3-4 hours in the tunnels, hiking on rough terrain. This adventurous journey takes you to the very end of a deep lava tunnel, where impressive lava falls and other natural monuments await. The tour is about 5 hours long, including the pick-up and drop-off, so you can expect to be back in town sometime before 16:00. Freshen up, have a change of clothes if you need, and get in the mood of a night out in Reykjavík. Late in the afternoon, you will visit Perlan Museum. Perlan offers a powerful blend of education, spectacle, and design—and is an excellent starting or ending point on any visit to Iceland.
Would you like help booking tickets or planning how to include it in your Reykjavík itinerary? Perlan Museum, known as "The Pearl," is a unique landmark and immersive science museum located atop Öskjuhlíð hill in Reykjavík, Iceland. Housed in a striking glass dome built atop hot water storage tanks, Perlan offers a fascinating blend of nature, technology, and architecture. It’s a top destination for learning about Iceland’s dramatic natural forces—perfect for all ages and ideal on rainy days.
The museum's main attraction is the Wonders of Iceland exhibition, which features a 100-meter-long indoor ice cave made from over 350 tons of real snow. There are interactive displays on glaciers, volcanoes, earthquakes, geothermal energy, and wildlife. A highlight is the 10-meter-high replica of the Látrabjarg seabird cliffs, home to puffins and other native species. Another exhibit, Water in Icelandic Nature, explores the role of water in Iceland's environment and daily life.
Perlan also features the Áróra Northern Lights planetarium show—an 8K visual journey combining Icelandic mythology with science, shown with surround sound in a full-dome theatre. The Volcano Show is another engaging multimedia experience, spotlighting Iceland’s volcanic activity, including recent eruptions like the 2021 Geldingadalir event.
At the top, a 360° observation deck offers spectacular panoramic views over Reykjavík, the mountains, ocean, and, on clear days, even the Snæfellsjökull glacier. There’s also a rotating restaurant, a café, an ice cream parlor, and a gift shop under the dome.
In short, Perlan combines stunning views, high-tech exhibits, and Iceland’s incredible natural wonders into one unforgettable stop. A wonderful experience to top off your stay here in Iceland. Later tonight, we recommend partying in downtown Reykjavik.
