Grocery Shopping in Iceland

Visiting Iceland is an unforgettable experience—but it’s no secret that it can be expensive, especially when it comes to dining out. One way to save money and experience local life is by shopping at grocery stores. Whether you're staying in a camper van, a guesthouse, or a rental apartment, understanding how and where to shop for food can enhance your trip.
At the same time, don’t miss the chance to try some of Iceland’s unique and historic dishes, many of which reflect the island’s isolation, climate, and seafaring roots.

Grocery Shopping in Iceland: What You Need to Know
Where to Shop
There are several grocery chains across the country. Here are the main ones:
- Bónus: Known for its low prices and iconic pink pig logo. Great for budget travelers.
- Krónan: Slightly more expensive than Bónus, but wider selection and often better quality.
- Hagkaup: Higher-end supermarket, open longer hours (some are 24/7), more specialty items.
- Nettó: Mid-range option; some locations are open late and include non-food items.
- 10-11: Convenience store-style chain, much more expensive, best avoided for big shopping trips.
What You’ll Find
Most grocery stores stock a familiar range of international and local foods:
- Fresh produce (though variety is limited compared to other countries)
- Dairy products like Skyr (a high-protein yogurt-like cheese)
- Breads, cold cuts, and local cheeses
- Frozen fish and lamb
- Packaged soups and instant noodles for quick meals
- Local specialties like smoked salmon, reindeer pâté, or Icelandic butter
Alcohol
You won’t find alcohol (above 2.25% ABV) in grocery stores. It’s sold only in state-run Vínbúðin stores. These have limited hours and may be closed on Sundays or holidays, so plan ahead.
